Gatina Washing Station, built in 1968, is located near the town of Karatina, between the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains and Mount Kenya.
It is managed by the Mugaga Farmers Cooperative Society, and today, the station receives cherries from 790 members (over 30% of whom are women).
Coffee grows on about 142 hectares, along with tea, maize and legumes.
The ripe cherries are picked by hand and delivered directly to Gatina or to one of the four collection points created, where they are to be sorted. Afterwards, they pass through dehulling machines and are fermented overnight.
After fermentation, the coffee is washed in clean water, spread and dried on raised beds for 7-15 days.
