The Kiamugumo processing station was established in 1970 and receives coffee from about 1150 smallholder farmers who are members of the New Ngariama Farmers' Cooperative Society.
Farmers grow coffee on less than a quarter of a hectare of land, along with other crops.
Picked cherries are delivered to the processing station, where they are pitted and placed in water to ferment for 12–24 hours. After this process, the coffee passes through water channels four times, and is then either spread out and dried on raised beds for 9-13 days.
The washing process in Kenya can vary slightly from place to place, but it generally contains a soaking step that is unique to this country.
