The Kiriani processing station, named after the village in which it is located, is owned by the Thikagiki Cooperative and has been processing coffee cherries since 1974. It has become a hub for the 571 farmers who deliver their coffee here for processing. The Kiriani farmers primarily cultivate the SL28 and SL34 varieties, taking care to ensure sustainability and good agricultural practices for minimal environmental impact. They selectively harvest ripe cherries and deliver them to Kiriani. Upon receipt, a supervisor oversees all cherries and ensures that only the highest quality ones are accepted. The cherries are pulped and then stored in tanks for 12 to 16 hours. After fermentation, the parchment is washed in clean water and placed on raised beds to dry.
Muranga, located near the Aberdare Mountains, provides a conducive environment for the slow development of coffee beans, thanks to the fertile volcanic soil and varied diurnal and nocturnal temperatures.
